GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)

What is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR ) is a European Union regulation that governs the protection of personal data of EU citizens. It came into force on May 25, 2018 and provides a uniform legal framework for data protection in all EU member states. GDPR affects all companies that process the personal data of EU citizens, regardless of whether the company is based inside or outside the EU.

Significance and requirements

The GDPR requires companies to ensure data security, make the handling of personal data transparent and grant users certain rights, such as the right to erasure, the right to data portability and the right of access. Violations of the GDPR can be punished with heavy fines. The regulation has prompted companies to revise their data protection practices and focus more on data security and building trust.
