DNS (Domain Name System)
What is DNA?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is an essential service on the Internet that translates domain names such as www.example.com into IP addresses (e.g. 192.168.1.1). This translation allows computers to communicate with each other as they use IP addresses, while humans can memorize names more easily. DNS thus acts as the Internet’s address book.
Functionality and safety aspects
A DNS server processes queries (so-called DNS queries) and returns the corresponding IP address. Without DNS, users would have to enter the corresponding IP address for each website. DNS security mechanisms such as DNSSEC (DNS Security Extensions) protect against manipulation such as DNS spoofing. Companies and private users benefit from a stable DNS service to ensure fast and secure Internet use.
