Caching

Functionality and aim of caching

Caching refers to the temporary storage of data in order to speed up access to frequently used information. This technology is used in various areas, e.g. in web browsersto load web pages faster, or in processorsto store data locally in cache memory to be stored. The cache acts as a kind of intermediate memory that enables fast read and write access and significantly increases the performance of a system.

Types of caches and areas of application

There are different types of caches, including data cacheswhich are used by processors, and web cachesthat store the content of websites. Another example is the DNS cachewhich saves the IP addresses of recently accessed websites in order to reduce the loading time. Caching is used in databases, Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and applications to use resources more efficiently. Correctly implemented caching improves the response time of systems and optimizes the use of bandwidth bandwidth and storage.
