BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)

Function and significance of the BIOS

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a firmware that executes basic functions when a computer is started. It initializes the hardware components such as Hard disks, memory and processor and ensures that they work together correctly. The BIOS then loads the operating system that is required for further use of the computer. The BIOS is a fundamental component of every computer and is stored in the so-called ROM (Read-Only Memory).

Modern developments and use

In modern systems, the classic BIOS is increasingly being replaced by UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which offers faster boot times, an intuitive user interface and improved security functions offers. However, the BIOS remains relevant in older devices and plays a key role in fault diagnosis and rectification, for example when hardware problems occur. Users can use the BIOS to configure basic settings such as Boot sequence, hardware configuration and password protection customize.
